Over 600 scientific research studies show that regular meditation can achieve all the benefits listed above as well as a happier more joyful state of mind. So why is it that something as simple as sitting still for 20-30 mins twice a day can reap such rewards? In meditation your mind becomes still. You settle down and your brainwaves or the electrical activity of your brain becomes more orderly. Parts of your brain that you wouldn't ordinarily access in the normal waking state become a potential for discovery and awakening.
Most of us have heard the saying that we only use approx 5-10% of our mind's potential. Meditation is the key to access the remaining 95% - mysterious untapped and waiting to reveal it's secrets.
Technological advancements have made it possible for anyone to enter deep states of meditation without prior knowledge or any formal instruction, though in my opinion it can be useful to have some information about what you're doing before entering into meditative states.
What is this technology?
Well there are quite a few one of the most effective being isochronic tones. Isochronic tones are pulsed soundwaves that are repeated rhythmically - very similar to someone striking a drum. What happens is that your brain tunes into this sound - it hears the pattern and follows in response to it. This is known as FFR or frequency following response. It is said to be the most effective brainwave entrainment method due to the evenly spaced extremely sharp on/off nature of the sound. Furthermore headphones are not obligatory. This makes it easier to use than types of entrainment such as binaural beats which only prove effective with the use headphones.
Through the principle of FFR your brain can be guided into various brainwave states. If for example you utilise a 10 hertz frequency (10 pulsed tones per second) you will enter the alpha state. There are various brainwave frequencies which are well documented and correlate to deep states of meditation. These progress from:-
Beta - waking state
Alpha - relaxed state
Theta - dream state
Delta - dreamless sleep
With no effort on your part - just a passive relaxed state- you can enter and train specific states of mind. If you want to increase intelligence you may want to train alpha and beta. If you want to explore deeper realms of the mind and your goal is to remain relaxed and stress free then theta may prove efficacious.
Entering delta states has been shown to be helpful in healing certain conditions such as high blood pressure or fibromyalgia. So as you can see a whole vista of potentials is made possible with regular use of this technology, it can even be used to help you or your baby get a good nights sleep.
